He's the legendary martial artist and actor known for saying, "Be the water, my friend," probably swallowing a lot of it. Bruce Lee, star of The Way of the Dragon and Fist of Fury, died suddenly on July 20, 1973 at the age of 32. At the time, his cause of death was cerebral edema, or swelling of the brain, and after nearly age 50, a new study suggests that Lee died from his "kidneys' inability to drain excess water."

The research study, conducted by a group of kidney specialists in Spain, was published in the December 2022 edition of the journal Clinical Kidney. "Until now, the cause of Bruce Lee's death is unknown, although numerous hypotheses have been put forward, ranging from murder by a trio of thugs to the most recent suggestion in 2018 that he died of heatstroke," the paper wrote, before noting that the average human brain weighs about three pounds, Lee weighed about 3.5 pounds at the time of his death.

According to the researchers, Lee had "multiple risk factors for hyponatremia" — an extremely low concentration of sodium in a person's blood. The condition may be worsened by "chronic fluid intake," marijuana use (which increases thirst), alcohol consumption, prescription drug use, and a documented history of organ trauma.

"In conclusion, we hypothesize that Bruce Lee died from a specific form of kidney dysfunction: the inability to excrete sufficient water to maintain water homeostasis, which is predominantly a tubular function," the study said. "This can lead to hyponatremia, cerebral edema, and death within hours if excess water intake does not match urinary water excretion, which is consistent with Lee's timeline of death." (Vanity Fair reached out to a manager of Lee's daughter, Shannon, for comment about the study and its findings.)

"Hyponatremia is frequent, as found in 40% of hospitalized individuals, and excess fluid intake can cause death even in young healthy individuals," the researchers continued, "There is a need for widespread promotion of the concept that overhydration can lead to death. " afford."
